Description

Wireworm nematodes are an effective against wireworms, the larvae of the Agriotes spp or click beetle. This product covers up to 60 sqm, providing protection against wireworm and the damaging effects of these root-feeding pests.

What Are Wireworms?

Wireworms are the larvae of the click beetle and can cause significant damage to plant roots, leading to wilting and even cause the plant to die, especially in young plants.

Female beetles lay eggs from late April to late July, usually beneath the surface of lawns or soil covered by plant foliage. The eggs hatch within a month, so it's essential to apply nematodes from May through the summer months to target the newly hatched larvae.

Wireworm larvae can persist in the soil for 3 to 5 years and burrow deeply, making them a long-term threat to plants.

How to Identify Wireworms

Wireworm larvae are long, thin, shiny, yellowish-brown creatures with dark heads. They resemble mealworms and typically measure between 10 to 15mm in length. Infestation indicators include damage to seedlings, roots, and the base of stems. The most noticeable damage is to root crops like potatoes, where tunnelling can be observed in the soil.

Signs of Wireworm Infestation

The most common signs include tunneling damage in root crops like potatoes and carrots, where the larvae feed on the roots.

When and How to Apply Wireworm Nematodes

Optimal Application Timing:  For the best results, apply the nematodes at least 5 days before planting susceptible crops like potatoes. This gives the nematodes time to establish in the soil and start targeting wireworms.

The ideal time for application is from May through the summer to catch newly hatched larvae.

Application Tips: After applying the nematodes, water the plants within 30 minutes to wash them off the leaves and onto the soil where they can target wireworm larvae.

Ideal Conditions/Soil Temperature: Ensure the soil temperature is above 10°C for effective application. Avoid using nematodes in freezing or extremely high temperatures.

Storage Guidelines: Store wireworm nematodes promptly after delivery, keeping them refrigerated (below 5°C) until use.

Coverage: Up to 60 sqm
