Description
Leatherjacket Control for a Healthy Lawn
Leatherjackets, the larval stage of crane flies or daddy-long-legs, can cause significant damage to lawns by feeding on grass roots. Their activity leads to yellow patches and dead grass, making effective management essential for maintaining a lush lawn.
When Are Leatherjackets Most Active?
Adult crane flies, commonly known as daddy-long-legs, appear in late summer, usually around the end of August. Within days, they lay eggs that hatch in about two weeks. The larvae start feeding on grass roots, causing damage throughout autumn, winter, and into spring.
What Can I Use to Treat Leatherjackets?
Leatherjacket nematodes are an effective and natural solution. These microscopic worms enter the larvae, release bacteria, and eliminate them. Simply mix the nematodes with water, apply to your lawn, and keep the soil moist to allow the nematodes to move and work efficiently.
- Safe for children, pets, and wildlife.
- No need to restrict access to treated areas.
- Environmentally friendly pest control option.
How to Identify Leatherjackets vs. Chafer Grubs
Chafer grubs are white, C-shaped with orange heads and six legs. Leatherjackets, on the other hand, are grey or brown, worm-like, and legless. Identifying the correct pest ensures effective treatment.
Signs of Leatherjacket Damage
Leatherjackets feed on grass roots, leading to:
- Yellow patches on your lawn.
- Thinning grass.
- Grass that is easily pulled up.
How to Apply Leatherjacket Nematodes
Nematodes are easy to apply and come with full instructions. For best results:
- Use a watering can with a rose attachment or a nematode applicator.
- Apply to moist soil when the temperature is above 10ºC (50ºF).
- Keep the soil moist for at least two weeks after application.
What Happens If Temperatures Drop?
Nematodes can survive occasional frost, so don’t worry if the temperature falls slightly after application. They will remain effective in controlling the leatherjacket larvae.
Delivery Information
Free delivery is available when ordering nematodes alone. For orders including other items, standard delivery charges apply.
Important Notes: Nematodes are live materials and cannot be returned. They typically have a two-week expiry date. Please ensure timely application to maximise their effectiveness.
