Description

Chafer Grubs: Identification and Control for a Healthier Lawn

What Are Chafer Grubs?

Chafer grubs are the larvae of chafer beetles, which emerge from the lawn and lay eggs that hatch into grubs. These grubs feed on grass roots, causing damage before burrowing deep into the ground. They lie dormant during winter and emerge in spring as adult beetles.

Signs of Chafer Grub Infestation

Chafer beetle larvae damage lawns by feeding on grass roots, causing slow growth and yellow patches. A common sign of infestation is wildlife, such as birds, foxes, and badgers, digging up your lawn in search of the grubs. The grass becomes easily lifted with minimal or no root growth, a clear indication of chafer grub activity.

How to Differentiate Chafer Grubs from Leatherjackets

Chafer Grubs: These grubs are C-shaped, white, with a distinct orange head and six legs.

Leatherjackets: These are worm-like, grey or brown, and legless, making them easy to differentiate from chafer grubs.

When to Apply Nematodes for Chafer Grub Control

The best time to apply nematodes is between April and May, and again from August to early October, when the young larvae are most active. While spring applications may offer some control, applying between August and October is the most effective period for chafer grub control.

Using Nematodes to Control Chafer Grubs

Nematodes are microscopic, beneficial worms that effectively control chafer grub populations. They enter the grubs through natural openings and release bacteria that kill the grubs within days, breaking the chafer beetle’s life cycle and preventing re-infestation.

How to Apply Chafer Nematodes

To apply nematodes, use a watering can or a nematode applicator. Apply to moist soil when the soil temperature is above 10ºC (50ºF). Ensure the soil remains moist for at least two weeks after applying the nematodes. Nematodes can survive mild frosts, so don’t worry if the temperature drops after application.
