Sturdy Structure – the wormery is made from black 100% recycled plastic. The parts which make up the wormery are:

Hinged, Fly Proof, Locking Lid – being hinged means it’s easy to leave the lid open as you add in your organic waste. Simply lift the lid to one side, peel back the worm blanket and you can then add your kitchen scraps etc.

Three Large Capacity Rectangular Working Trays – each feature air ventilation holes on the sides for good ventilation whilst preventing the contents of the wormery from being soaked if it rains and your wormery is being used outdoors. When using the worm café for the first time, start with just the base, collector tray and one working tray with lid. Once the worms eat their way through the scraps added to this tray it’s then time to add the second, stackable tray. Once the second tray is full, add the third. Once the worms have eaten their way through the top tray of garden waste, it will be time for you to harvest the vermicompost from the lowest working tray and use the then empty tray to become the new, top working tray of the wormery. In this way you will be constantly recycling your organic waste into a nutrient rich compost for your garden.

Sloping Collector Tray With Worm Mound and Tap – this base tray has been slightly angled to encourage the liquid worm tea to drain towards the tap (this nutrient rich worm tea is a superb natural liquid fertiliser that you can use, when diluted with water, to feed your plants). A central ‘mound’ has been built into the design of this tray so any worms that fall into this tray are able to climb back up to reach the working trays again.

Strong Legs – which should not buckle under weight as the working trays become full. These legs include caps to prevent ants from climbing up. The legs lift the body of the wormery high enough from the ground so you can place a bucket below the tap to easily collect the worm tea.

125g Composting Worms –  worms will be sent out with your wormery unless you specify you would like to receive a voucher. These worms are natures composters, with a veracious appetite they will quickly turn compostable waste into compost. These dendrobaena composting worms are self-regulating, the more food available the more they will breed.

850g Worm Farm and Compost Conditioner – developed to help neutralize acidity and balance pH levels so that your composting worms can digest larger quantities of waste faster. Made from a specially selected blend of natural minerals this conditioner helps soil bacteria preserve essential nutrients and increases the availability of nutrients for your plants. It also helps reduce odours and pest infestations.

Worm Blanket – this is used to cover the waste contents of the wormery and helps to create an a dark, moist, aerated environment that encourages the worms to work efficiently. Made from breathable, 100% natural fibre (bio-degradable jute fibre), the blanket is thicker than a hessian bag and will break down as your worms work within the wormery – you can expect the worm blanket to last for between 3-6 months before it will need replacing.

What To Add To The Wormery – only add sufficient waste that your worms will be able to eat – so don’t add more than a 2cm layer of waste / food into the wormery at a time. Chop up food scraps as small as possible – normal food scraps are fine but avoid large quantities of meat, citrus, onion and dairy foods. Sprinkler a handful of garden soil (or organic potting mix) on top of the foods scraps every time you add them to the wormery. You can also add tea leaves/bags and coffee grounds, vacuum cleaner dust and hair clippings, torn up newspapers, egg and milk or soaked pizza cartons and crushed egg shells. The greater the variety of material you use, the better the castings will be.

Composting Speed – we would expect it to take 3-6 months for the first tray to become full. Once it reached the top of the tray is the time to add the next tray into the stack. When the second tray has become full it is time to harvest the vermicompost from the first tray.

Recommended Location – your Worm Cafe can be used outdoors or indoors – it’s perfect for in a shed or a shaded location in your garden (put it somewhere that’s convenient for you but that avoids afternoon sun), on a balcony, in a utility room etc etc.
