Weather Warnings On St Swithin’s Day ... Should We Start Building An Ark?

rain cartoon from the world of Peanuts

St. Swithin's day if thou dost rain
For forty days it will remain
St. Swithin's day if thou be fair
For forty days 'twill rain nae mair.

So, with St Swithin’s Day nearly over I think it’s far to say we could be in with another forty days of rain to come ...

So I’m guessing I should be investing in an ark building business, kicking out the suncream and finding the old thermals again ...

What’s St Swithin’s Day All About ...

You might or might not agree with folk lore, legends and myths ... but with the rain pouring down and no end in sight maybe the famous St Swithin’s saying is going to come true. But who was St Swithin and how did the legend about St Swithin’s Day start?

Quick History Lesson ...
Born around 800, St Swithin was the Saxon Bishop of Winchester. On his deathbed in 862 he asked to be buried in a humble grave outside of his cathedral so that "the sweet rain from heaven" could fall on his grave.
Unfortunately nine years later the monks had decided this humble resting place was not a suitable burial place and decided to move his grave to an ornate shrine that they had built for him.
And it’s on this eventful day, 15th July 971 that the legend began ...
During the ceremony torrential rains began and continued from that day for forty days and nights and it is said this was St Swithin showing his displeasure of the planned move ...

BBC weather warnings

I’m battening down the hatches, turning on the central heating and hoping the house won’t be floating in the morning ...

There's another one I recall from my childhood that seems to genuinely work. It's about when trees come into leaf: "Oak before ash, we're in for a splash. Ash before oak, we're in for a soak." Certainly worked this year... the ash trees in Herefordshire were in leaf some time before the oaks!

I read that the jet stream which brings our weather is usually set by 15th July, so whatever type of weather we have by then is the type of weather we'll have all summer, more or less. Certianly seems to be the case this year.

I am already well into my ark-building project. The 600 cubits of gopher wood are still on order though.. supply problems apparently!
