How To Fill Your Raised Based . . . to achieve maximum growing success

This simple recipe of layers is based on you having a raised bed built to be 2ft 5½in / 75cm high.

First – create a ‘rodent guard’ at the base of the raised bed using a fine wire mesh which they won’t be able to chew through.

Second – a layer of tree and brush cuttings approx. 8in / 20cm high. This layer should consist of roughly chopped twigs and branches which will leave lots of air pockets for goods air circulation within the raised bed and will encourage layers of materials above to rot down successfully and provide nutrients to your plants.

Third – a layer of green waste approx. 4in / 10cm high. This layer can be made up of a mix of garden waste including leaves, grass cuttings, small prunnings, straw etc. This layer will rot down into the layer below it.

Fourth – a layer of garden soil approx. 4in / 10cm high.

Five – a layer or mature compost (or a mixture of compost and soil) approx. 4in / 10cm high.

Six – a layer of good quality growing compost approx. 6in / 15cm high. This layer will take you to the top of the raised beds and is where you will plant your seeds, seedlings or small plants ready to grow.
