Shading

Greenhouse Shading is essential during the summer months - even during a British summer the sun is able to increase temperatures within the greenhouse to such an extent that plants can be damaged - a surprising amount of damage from overheating and scorching can be done to your plants in a very short period of time.
The simplest way to provide shade within your greenhouse is to apply a paint on shading to the outside of the glazing - modern shading paints react to sunlight, so when it rains the shading remains clear letting in full light and when sunny it turns white, reflecting the rays of the sun.
The other way to shade your greenhouse is to use a shade fabric. Fit a shade fabric to the outside of your greenhouse for the maximum cooling effect - this is effective as it prevents the sun's rays from passing through the greenhouse glazing. Or you can fit greenhouse shading fabric to the inside of the greenhouse - it's easier to install inside but does not have the same cooling effect as fixing it outside as the sun's rays pass through the glazing and generate heat within the greenhouse.
However, shading alone, will not protect your plants from heat damage - greenhouse shading needs to be combined with good greenhouse ventilation and humidity - the correct combination of these three factors will help create an environment that is suitable for healthy plant growth.

Paint on Shading
Paint on shading is a practical, cost effective and efficient way of shading your greenhouse. The shading is diluted in water and painted or sprayed onto the outside of the greenhouse glazing in spring. The paint on shading we supply is Nixol, which will remain effective for up to 7 months, so you only need apply once a year.
Unlike traditional paint on shading, Nixol becomes clearer in wet or damp conditions and only provides shade when it's dry, when it turns white, reflecting the rays of the sun to protect from heat and glare. In this way Nixol only supplies shade when the plants need it and doesn't rely on you moving the shading on dull days.
Greenhouses can be affected by overheating from spring through until autumn - signs to look out for that show you should be providing shade are leaf scorching, partial collapse of plants and desiccation of young plants and shoots.
Shade Fabric
Shading your greenhouse is usually required from the middle of spring through until early autumn and an effective way to shade your greenhouse is to use a shade fabric. Greenhouse Shade Fabric is best fitted to the outside of your greenhouse - it will be 40% more effective installed outside compared to being installed inside. By fitting to the outside, the shade fabric stops the sun's rays from passing through the glass - so producing the maximum cooling effect.
However, if fitting the shade fabric to the outside is too tricky, then fix inside your greenhouse. Use fixing clips to hold the shade fabric against the frame of the greenhouse. Although fixing the shading to the inside of the greenhouse will not have the same cooling effect as fitting to the outside (as the sun's rays are able to pass through the glass and generate heat) it is still an effective way of shading your greenhouse.
Shade Accessories
Shade greenhouses easily and efficiently with the help of these high quality accessories that will securely hold greenhouse shading materials in place. Simply select the fixing to suit the type of greenhouse which you have - aluminium, timber or plastic - and whether the shading is going to be fixed to the outside or inside of the greenhouse.
When deciding whether to fix your greenhouse shading to the inside or outside of your greenhouse, consider the following: shading is 40% more effective when fitted on the OUTSIDE of the greenhouse. Shading is more effective fitted to the outside of the greenhouse as it not only provides shade, it also prevents the sun's rays from passing through the glass so having a cooling effect as well.
