For Getting The Self Watering Tray to Work Efficiently The self watering tray works by capillary action – water is sucked up from the reservoir by the capillary matting. To ensure your plants receive the water they need the compost they are growing in needs to have direct contact with the capillary matting. This works if your seed trays or plant pots have holes in the base and sit flat on top of the matting.
Before placing seed trays or pots onto the self watering tray you need to make sure that the compost within the trays is moist – if dry the capillary flow will be hindered. If, for any reason, the reservoir of the tray becomes empty or the compost dries out, you will need to water the trays and pots by hand to ensure the capillary flow is restarted.
Capillary matting has a life expectancy of two years. However, if you live in a hard water area, the performance of the matting may be affected by lime scale deposits. If this happens all you need to do is soak the matting in a weak acid solution (such as vinegar), then rinse thoroughly and it will be ready to re-use.
