A Sundial is actually one of the earliest forms of time keeper. It indicates the daylight hours by the shadow which the ‘style’ or ‘gnomon’ (the stick in the sundial) casts on the calibrated dial. The advantage of a sundial over other time keeping devices is that is has no mechanical parts and requires no maintenance. However, the obvious disadvantage with a sundial is that it only works on a sunny day!
