Top Tips When Using Grow Pots Preparing Your Grow Bag
Suitable for use in any type of grow bag, start by shaking or rolling the grow bag to loosen the compost inside – this ensures good root penetration and makes it easier for you when fitting your grow pots. Then place the grow bag on a flat surface, free from sharp objects and making sure the contents are evenly distributed.
Ensure that your grow bag has some drainage holes – the bag is often already pierced with drainage holes – when placing your grow bag in position just make sure these are on the top of the bag.
Grow Pot Application
You should be able to use three Grow Pots in a grow bag, spacing them equally along the length of the bag. Using a light pressure, push the Grow Pot through the plastic of the grow bag, twisting the pot in either direction so the teeth along the base of the pot cut through the pot.
One the Grow Pot is in position simply remove the plastic bag circle through the inner pot.
Planting In The Grow Pots
Place good quality planting compost in the inner pot on top of the growing bag compost. Fill until level with the top of the rim of the outer trough. Match planting compost to growing bag compost, i.e. peat to peat, coir to coir. At this stage, if planting tomatoes or cucumbers, ensure support strings are already in position and loose ends hang into each pot.
Hollow out the centre of the compost and place plant within, tucking the loose end of string under the rootball and firm around. To help establish the new plant water into the inner pot, using approximately a pint of water.
Fill the outer trough of the Grow Pot to the top (this should take about four pints of water) and leave to slowly saturate the grow bag.
Watering Using The Grow Pots For the first two weeks after establishing your plants in your grow bag you shouldn’t need to add any more water to the outer trough. This ensures a strong, healthy root system will be encouraged with the roots searching out every drop of moisture in the grow bag.
For the following 3 to 4 weeks pour a maximum of two pints of water into each outer trough every 2 to 3 days. During this time ensure the inner pot does not dry out by watering once a week. Any excess water will drain through the drainage holes in your grow bag – if you see this happening simply miss out a day of watering.
As your plants start to grow they will send down secondary roots or ‘water roots’ into the grow bag compost. After 4 to 6 weeks it will be necessary to increase the amount of water in the outer trough. When your plants have matured, on hot sunny days, it’s likely that you’ll need to fill up the outer trough every day.
